Ben Ordiway is a retired U.S. Army officer and the creator of Moral Terrain Coaching (MTC). He began his Army career as an enlisted soldier in 2004, later serving as an Armor officer and a Civil Affairs officer in Army Special Operations.

He earned a B.S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point and an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Michigan, where his work focused on applied ethics, moral reasoning, and character development. He later returned to West Point to teach philosophy, with an emphasis on professional ethics.

Ben began developing MTC in 2020 during his graduate studies. Over the next four years, he refined the methodology through field engagements with U.S. Special Operations organizations, universities, military academies, and professional ethics societies across North America and Europe.

In 2024, Ben worked with West Point faculty members Dr. Elise Dykhuis and Dr. Peter Meindl to conduct a randomized controlled field trial involving 569 cadets and 40 officers. The findings showed that MTC significantly increased moral humility and motivated participants to improve specific character traits.

In 2025, West Point hosted the first MTC Coach Certification course, preparing leaders from Army ROTC, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and West Point to bring MTC into their own organizations.

MTC continues to support leader-development efforts at West Point and with military organizations abroad.
