3 Ways to Develop
Moral Competence
Choose one—or combine them to fit your organization.
MTC Foundations
Workshop
Build a shared language for decisions and action under pressure.
This 6-hour experiential workshop introduces the MTC framework through concise instruction, realistic scenarios, guided reflection, a coaching demonstration, and paired practice.
Participants learn to identify morally significant moments, examine the forces shaping judgment, and use structured questions to help others think more carefully.
Includes:
• Customized scenario work
• MTC field cards
• Facilitated coaching demonstration
• Paired coaching practice
• Observations and recommendations
Best for: professional development, leadership programs, team training, and organizations introducing MTC for the first time.
Format: 6 hours, in person, for 6–40 participants.
Program Cost: $3,500–$4,500
Government Purchase Cards accepted
Travel & per diem not included
MTC training
integration
Develop moral competence inside the training you already conduct.
This 3- to 5-day engagement integrates MTC coaches directly into an existing exercise, simulation, or field training event. No prior MTC classroom instruction is required for participating personnel. When a morally significant moment occurs, it becomes an immediate opportunity for structured reflection and development.
Your organization does not need to create a separate “ethics lane.” MTC adds deliberate moral competence development to the technical and professional training already underway.
Includes:
• Pre-engagement training assessment
• Integration planning with exercise staff
• On-site Moral Terrain Coaching
• Facilitated group reflection when appropriate
• Observations and recommendations
Best for: organizations with established experiential training that want to add a moral competence component without creating an entirely new training event.
Format: 3- to 5-days, in person, scope tailored to the exercise and participating population.
Program Cost: Pricing based on scope, duration, group size, and implementation requirements.
Government Purchase Cards accepted
Travel & per diem not included
MTC coach
certification
Build an enduring capability inside your organization.
The 4- to 5-day certification course prepares selected personnel to conduct MTC within their organization.
Participants learn the conceptual framework, practice guided discovery, conduct repeated coaching sessions, and receive direct feedback through an assessed field practicum.
Includes:
• MTC instructional materials and field cards
• Repeated coached practice and feedback
• Field-based coaching practicum
• Certification assessment
• Organizational implementation planning
Best for: commands, academies, and organizations seeking a scalable internal approach to developing moral competence.
Format: 4- to 5 days, in person, for 6–20 participants.
Program Cost:
6–10 participants: $18,000
11–15 participants: $25,000
16–20 participants: $32,000
Government Purchase Cards accepted
Travel & per diem not included
I have limited training days, competing priorities, and no requirement called “moral competence.” Why should I spend resources on this?
Because you're already trusting people to demonstrate moral competence—and MTC develops it inside training you're already conducting.
Is the 25-minute coaching conversation the entire MTC program?
No. The structured coaching conversation is the core of MTC, but each service provides a different level of instruction, practice, and organizational support.
For Training Integration, MTC can be incorporated directly into an existing exercise or training event without requiring a separate classroom block for participants.
For organizations seeking to understand the method more deeply or build their own internal coaching capability, MTC also offers classroom instruction, practical exercises, and coach preparation. These elements provide the concepts and skills needed to employ the coaching method effectively within the organization.
Does MTC tell participants what the “right” answer is?
No. MTC is not designed to prescribe a predetermined answer. The coach guides a structured examination of the situation so participants can better recognize what was at stake, understand how they reasoned, and evaluate how they responded.
Is MTC a behavioral health care or moral injury intervention?
No. MTC is a developmental training method, not clinical treatment. It is designed to strengthen moral recognition, moral reasoning, and moral courage before and after difficult decisions. It may help people process the moral dimensions of experience more deliberately, but it does not replace behavioral-health care when that care is needed.
Does the Coach Certification allow graduates to certify other coaches?
No. Certification prepares graduates to conduct MTC within their organization. MTC Coach Certification courses are conducted by Moral Terrain Coaching or an authorized certification provider.
